Kids will love making these fun and colourful book bags in time for school to start again!
All you need is some tape, paper, scissors and rope to whip these up (no sewing machine needed here, phew!). And the great thing is you can personalise the designs on the front, so each child can have their own special bag to carry around their keepsakes.
For these bags I've used Scotch® Expressions Duct Tape, it's a really cool tape which is strong and moisture resistant - great for projects the kids will use out and about! Then I've used Scotch® Expressions Glitter and Washi tape to decorate the bag - there are so many beautiful designs and colours so you'll have fun choosing which to use.
Ok let's get started...
Scotch® Expressions Duct Tape - I used less than 1 roll (or buy more if you want different colours), you can buy this from Warehouse Stationery
Scotch Expressions Washi Tape and/or Glitter Tape - for decorating the bag. You can also buy these from Warehouse Stationery
Rope - I used rope about 7mm thick from a hardware store. You'll need a piece about 1.5m long.
Scotch® Scissors - or instead you can use a cutting mat, ruler and a craft knife (it's just as easy either way)
For this step you cover the two pieces of A4 paper with layers of Duct Tape.
To do this, layer pieces of tape over the paper until the whole side is covered. Then do the same on the other side. Try to keep it reasonably tidy in straight lines.
Trim each sheet along the edges so it is A4 size again.
A: Attach the rope to the bottom of the bag and tape it on both sides to keep it secure.
The best way to do this is to lay the rope out straight, then line the bottom edges of the bag up on either side of the rope. Cut a piece of Duct Tape the same length as the bottom of the bag and stick it on over the join (so that it sticks to the rope and both sides of the bag).
Then flip it over and tape the other side in the same way.
B: Next tape the rope up either side of the bag.
To do this, bring up the sides of the bag so that they are facing each other. Then line the rope up along each side of the bag so that it is coming together at the top. Now cut a piece of Duct Tape the same length as the side of the bag, and stick it around one side to secure the rope.
Then do the same on the other side.
You can trim any excess tape that might be over hanging the edges at this point. And its a good idea to open up the bag and attach some pieces of tape over the inside join at the sides too.
C: Join the Handle.
Join the rope at the top and double it over evenly until you have the length handle you want. Then simply use small pieces of Duct Tape to wrap around the rope, joining it together, until the handle is nice and secure.
If you wish, you can cut a V in the top of bag to give it a nice shape. Or feel free to leave it square.
Use Washi Tape and/or Glitter Tape to decorate the bag in whatever designs you wish. You can try spelling out names, stripes, grids etc. Or use the tape to make decals (e.g. crosses, exclamation marks, spots, confetti etc). Have fun making something unique!
And that's it you are done! How cute is this little bag?
I hope you enjoyed this project and I'd LOVE to see photos of your creations xx
